Abstract

Background: Electives posting for MBBS undergraduate (UG) students was introduced by NMC (National Medical Council), India as a part of the newly implemented CBME (Competence based medical education) curriculum from 2019. Electives’ posting in Indian undergraduate medical curriculum is a new concept. But; since it was for the first time that electives have been implemented in Medical Education in India and in our institution, we would like to share our experience of organizing Electives, collecting feedback from the students and understanding student’s perspective in our medical college which is 10 years old. Methods : We analyzed the responses of medical students from the 1 st batch of CBME in our college. This study was conducted at HBT Medical College, Mumbai India in 2025. Institutional Ethics committee approved the study and consent for participation was taken from the students before their participation in the study. This was a prospective Observational study. The aim of this study was to collect the feedback about the electives posting from the medical students; the objectives were to analyze the feedback forms to understand the student’s perspective regarding the duration of electives, its usefulness, and their perception of learning during the electives. Results : Out of 180 students, 157 consented to participate in the study. 116 students said their expectations of taking the particular electives posting were met by that elective posting, 21 students felt their expectations were not met, 19 were not sure about it. 124 students felt it should be 15 days and not 1 month, 22 felt it was not enough and 11 were not sure. We found that more than 63% students found the electives posting useful and more than 70% were satisfied with the electives posting. Conclusions: Electives posting will help the undergraduate students to become more self- directed and experiential learners. Supportive, motivational interactive preceptor has an important role in making the electives posting interesting.
