Abstract

Purpose: To understand the family economic burden and social support needs of malignant tumor children, and to provide theoretical basis for the construction of social support services for cancer children's families. Methods: 20 public welfare organizations, including Beijing New Sunshine Charity Foundation, were recruited and investigated with a questionnaire containing 57 questions. The contents of the questionnaire included basic data of caregivers of children with malignant tumors, basic information and diagnosis and treatment of patients, economic burden of family diseases, and social support. Results: A total of 591 valid questionnaires were collected. The average age of the patients was 7 years old, and nearly 30% of the patients were in adolescence (10-19 years old). According to the distribution of tumor types, the order was leukemia, solid tumor and lymphoma. Among the 245 patients who had been treated, the median cumulative direct medical burden was ¥1,000,000, and the average age of the patients was 7 years old. After the diagnosis, the average annual household income decreased by 33.79%. Children with malignant tumor have many problems, such as lack of education in school, lack of educational resources, poor social integration and so on. Conclusion: The family of children with malignant tumor has a heavy economic burden, which is affected by many factors, such as disease characteristics, medical treatment in other places, participation in insurance, family income and so on. Such families have various social support needs, including financial subsidies, educational support, psychological guidance and so on.
