Abstract

Introduction Understanding and supporting the psychological wellbeing (PWB) of transracial adoptees is crucial due to their vulnerability, which can inform the development of appropriate support measures. Objective This systematic review examines the relationship between transracial adoption (TRA) and the PWB of adoptees. Methods The study implemented inclusion and exclusion criteria (using PICOS), resulting in the retrieval of 12 relevant papers. Findings A pattern of negative psychological impact on transracial adoptees is evident in the findings, and colour-blind racial ideology and discrimination play a significant role. Although negative PWB may have also been caused by confounding factors, specifically poor attachment foundation. Conclusion This systematic review underscores the significance of a contentious and often overlooked subject of TRA and raises concerns about its efficacy as a viable solution for the adoptees in the care system. This paper emphasises the necessity for clinicians and welfare agencies to assist transracial adoptees as the synthesis of the impact TRA has on the adoptees.
