The melting curve and phase diagram of pure Ir has been characterized in situ using a combination of synchrotron X-ray diffraction and laser- and resistively- heated diamond anvil cells. The results, obtained in a pressure-temperature range between ambient and 100 GPa and 5500 K, respectively, confirm the stability of the face-centered cubic solid phase of Ir and the melting curve previously predicted using quantum molecular dynamic simulations. Finally, from the results obtained it was possible to obtain a thermal equation of state for Ir valid up to at least 80 GPa and 4200 K. The reported results are relevant for the applications of Ir in various high-tech industries.
