Abstract

The rapid proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in education has fundamentally transformed teaching and learning processes, particularly in higher education settings. As AI tools become increasingly accessible and embedded in academic workflows, it is imperative to understand how students perceive these technologies and their impact on academic performance. This study addresses a critical gap in the literature by investigating students’ perceptions of AI use in learning and its perceived influence on academic achievement at A’Sharqiyah University. The central problem explored in this study is the ambiguity surrounding students' trust in, reliance on, and ethical understanding of AI in academic contexts. The significance of the study lies in its potential to inform educators, institutional leaders, and policymakers on how to develop AI-integrated learning environments that are both effective and ethically responsible. The study employed a quantitative, descriptive survey methodology using a structured questionnaire distributed via Google Forms to 72 undergraduate students between January and February 2025. Findings reveal that a significant proportion of students use AI tools, particularly ChatGPT, for enhancing learning efficiency and saving time. While most reported improved academic performance, concerns were expressed regarding trustworthiness, ethical risks such as plagiarism, and lack of skill in using AI. The majority were open to recommending AI tools, signalling a generally positive disposition tempered by critical reflection. These findings underscore the need for structured AI literacy programs and institutional policies that address ethical concerns, foster responsible AI engagement, and support students in maximizing the educational benefits of AI technologies. The study contributes to the evolving discourse on smart learning and offers actionable insights for shaping the future of AI-enhanced education.
