Abstract

Single case designs (SCDs) have emerged as a vital method for evaluating the impact of individualized interventions, particularly in the fields of special education and applied behavior analysis. This study employed a mixed-methods survey to explore expert perceptions and opinions regarding the evolving landscape of several SCD practices: (1) masked analysis, (2) a priori decision-making, and (3) non-concurrent designs. To be included in the survey data, participants must either have attended a single-case methodology conference, authored a single-case design study in the last two years (2022 – 2024), or have been forwarded the survey link by a fellow researcher. A total of fifty-three SCD experts responded to the survey. Findings from the survey reflect polarization in the opinions regarding masked analysis, a priori decision-making, and non-concurrent designs. Overall results underscore the need for greater inclusivity, flexibility, and transparency in evaluating and reporting SCD methodologies, as the field continues to evolve.
