Differences in Factors Affecting School Adjustment by School Type in China: Predictions from School Culture

Abstract

In the past, the factors affecting school adjustment have generally been explained by relationships with friends, relationships with teachers, academic performance, family,and individual environments. However, the factors that most influence school adjustment can vary depending on the type of school, and there were cases where the effects of these factors were contradictory. Additionally, in China, there are two types of high schools: "general high schools" and "vocational high school."it is believed that the school culture differs depending on the type of school, potentially influencing the values of the school. Therefore, this article to clarify which factors most influence school adjustment by understanding the school culture based on the type of school. An online survey was conducted with high school students from general academic high schools and secondary vocational high schools. Examination of differences in school climate by school type revealed statistically significant differences. Investigation of how school climate affects school adjustment demonstrated that school climate enhances school adjustment, with effectiveness observed in interpersonal relationships. Examination of the relationship between interpersonal relationships and school adjustment in both school types by school type showed that school climate differs by school type, and it was demonstrated that school climate has a positive effect on school adjustment. Additionally, it was shown that the impact of interpersonal relationships on school adjustment differs by school type. When conducting future research on school adjustment, it is necessary to consider school climate as one factor, and it was also shown that the focus of interventions differs by school type. Furthermore, regarding clinical interventions and prevention, the focus of interventions differs by school type, and conducting interventions on interpersonal relationships tailored to that school climate may be effective.
