CNC Routers are frequently used for the manufacturing of soft materials such as wood due to their versatility and efficiency. This study investigates the influence of the key factors affecting the dimensional accuracy of a parts machined on the Techno CNC Router at MIT’s Machine Shop. Design of Experiments (DOE) was used to study the significance of spatial location, grain orientation, tool entry point and material type (Mahogany and Maple). Initial experiments demonstrated that the spatial location on the bed did not have a significant effect on the dimensional accuracy. Further experiments suggested that the grain orientation, material and their interaction had a significant effect on the dimensional accuracy up to a confidence interval of 95%. It was finally hypothesized that the experimental results are governed by the size and orientation of fibers in different types of wood. These findings are essential for enhancing CNC machining precision in woodworking applications.
