Due to language barriers, studying in English-speaking countries poses a challenge for many international postgraduate students. However, although higher educational institutions (HEIs) are taking steps to address linguistic needs by introducing language support, some students still encounter language obstacles, particularly in English slang. Therefore, it is essential to look at a modified Spolsky's (2004) language policy model and Vygotsky's (1978) sociocultural theory and the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). Subsequently, a mixed-methods study revealed that international postgraduate students have neutral attitudes towards the effect of English language policy, primarily due to their varying language beliefs in the use of the English language, the language support system, the practice of English in academic environments, and language identities, influenced by their sociocultural settings. Furthermore, students' cultural backgrounds and social environments influenced their English slang usage. Consequently, practical implications and recommendations are provided.
