Abstract

Intestinal intussusception is a condition where a segment of the intestine telescopes into an adjacent segment. A male, dead, eight-day old lamb was referred to the pathology department of the specialized veterinary clinic at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran. The animal was necropsied and the main gross lesions were three jejunojejunal intussusceptions. In all the small intestinal intussusceptions observed, the intussuscipiens segments had a folded appearance resembling an accordion. Histopathological examinations of the jejunojejunal intussusception revealed severe hemorrhagic infarction of the affected segments and bacterial colonization of tunica mucosa. For the first time, this study reports the occurrence of three jejunojejunal intussusceptions in a newborn lamb. The authors emphasize that for postmortem diagnosis, the folded serosal surface of the intussuscipiens is a key diagnostic feature, rather than its significant distension or dark-color changes.
