Abstract

This paper examines the implementation of Competency-Based English Language Teaching (CBE) at local universities in Northern Vietnam, focusing on the opportunities and challenges that arise in the digital age, particularly in light of the influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI). In the era of globalization, there is an increasing demand for language proficiency in the workforce. Yet, local universities often face significant obstacles due to disparities in student language proficiency and the limited availability of qualified teachers. This study aims to assess the current application of CBE in English language teaching, identify the benefits for students and educators, and analyze the challenges in adopting this approach in local universities. Through surveys and interviews with faculty and students, this research highlights the unique circumstances of local universities, such as limited resources and a lack of practical engagement with foreign experts. The paper also proposes solutions for optimizing the implementation of CBE, emphasizing the need for infrastructure improvements, teacher training, and curriculum redesign. The findings contribute to the understanding of how CBE can be effectively integrated into local contexts, helping improve English language education in regional universities in Vietnam.
