Abstract

Background : Ethiopia plans to introduce a social health insurance scheme for the formal sector. Objective: Assess the affordability of the proposed social health insurance and its associated factors among public institution servants in Metekel zone, North West, Ethiopia, 2021. Methods: Institution-based cross-sectional study Design Was used among a randomly selected 973 public servants in the Metekel zone. Results: The study revealed that 905 (97.8%) respondents can afford the 3% gross salary per month as a scheme premium. Educational status and family size were significant factors for the scheme's affordability. Conclusion: The study revealed that the affordability of health insurance would not be a serious challenge to introducing SHI for the formal sector.
