Experiences of Family Caregivers of Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury: A Study in the Tamale Metropolis

Background: Traumatic brain injury is a major global health issue, impacting all aspects of life, including the psychosocial well-being of affected individuals and their families. This study aimed to explore the experiences of family caregivers of TBI patients in Tamale Metropolis. Methods: The study used a descriptive exploratory qualitative approach to understand the experiences of family caregivers of TBI patients in Tamale Metropolis. Purposive sampling selected caregivers, and face-to-face interviews were conducted using a semi-structured guide. Data was analyzed through thematic content analysis. Findings: The findings revealed that participants experienced psychological effects, including stress, anxiety, and satisfaction in caring for their TBI relatives, as well as social effects like socialization issues, poor relationships, and job-related challenges. They coped through strategies such as adjustments, divine intervention, support from family and friends, and patience. Conclusion: The study lays the foundation for future research on the experiences of family caregivers of TBI survivors in Tamale. It also highlights the need for health providers to focus on educating and supporting these caregivers.
