Abstract

Introduction: Physical literacy is an rising construct for promoting human flourishing. However, research on the heterogeneity of individual physical literacy using person-oriented methods is insufficient. Following a person-oriented approach, this study aims to 1) examine the physical literacy profiles of adolescents based on knowledge and understanding, sense of self and self-confidence, self-expression and communication with others in Perceived Physical Literacy Instrument. 2) analyse the relationship between physical literacy profiles of Chinese mainland adolescents, and physical activity, resilience, screen time. 3) explore the role of resilience between physical literacy profiles and physical activity, screen time. Methods 1004 adolescents (55.2% girls, age M  = 14.84 SD  = 1.79) grades participated. The key variables were assessed through questionnaire methods. The statistic analyses included latent profile analysis, ANOVA, and mediation modelling. Results Three profiles were founded. Low physical literacy (20%), moderate physical literacy (43%) and high physical literacy (37%). Compared with low and moderate physical literacy, high physical literacy adolescents have better physical activity, resilience. High physical literacy adolescents have less screen time compared to low physical literacy adolescents, there was no statistical difference in screen time between moderate physical literacy and low and high physical literacy. Resilience has a mediating effect in profiles and physical activity and screen time. Conclusions Findings suggest that three profiles demonstrating consistency across the domains, resilience is an important factor in promoting physical activity and reducing screen time. Thus, future interventions should focus on fostering resilience and developing each core domains of physical literacy in adolescents across family, school, and community settings.
