Abstract

The research investigates the influence of basic psychological needs (BPN) on grit and academic self-efficacy. Data were gathered from 372 students majoring in English at two universities in Vietnam. The data were then analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) with Smart-PLS 4.1 software. The findings indicate that perseverance consistently correlates significantly with academic self-efficacy and the three components of basic psychological needs. Nonetheless, the consistency of interest has unforeseen results. The need for autonomy appears to be a relatively insignificant factor among students majoring in languages in Vietnam. The research enhances the literature by demonstrating the impact of psychological constructs on academic performance, with practical implications for educational administration and pedagogy.
