Voltage instability problem in power system network is one of the main issues in power system network to prevent the voltage collapse during both the normal and contingency cases. Reactive power planning is performed to enhance the voltage stability of the power system network during the normal and contingency (N-1) operation using novel voltage stability index. The proposed index has been evaluated to identify the weak buses to allocate the reactive power compensator to insure the bus voltage level within limits and improve the voltage stability. The novel voltage stability index is simple algebraic equation with no use for any differential equation and can be included as objective function for optimal reactive power planning. The novel index has been applied to modified IEEE 9-bus and 14-bus systems including renewable energy such as hydro, wind turbines and PV- solar cells. Using DIgSILENT software to investigate the simulation results.
