Abstract

We present a report of a mass casualty event and discuss methods for determining the position of the victims relative to an explosion epicenter based on injury mapping and blast modeling. Injuries were mapped on a model of the victim as photographed by forensic experts upon arrival. The damage was color coded and used for modeling (3DsMax software) through graphic overlay on photographs of victims and analysis of extent and severity of the resulting color schematic. The injury mapping results of 28 victims were used to suggest and model victim location in the subway car at the time of explosion. Injury mapping based on accurate anatomical classification allowed for the reconstruction of victim location, positioning, blast origin, victim displacement following an IED detonation in a confined space.
