Abstract

Food waste remains a critical challenge for global food security, yet consumer-driven waste, particularly among college students, has received limited research attention. This study explores the factors influencing food waste behavior among college students in Chengalpattu district, Tamil Nadu. Using a qualitative approach, we conducted 30 in-depth interviews with students from higher education institutions—18 on-campus and 12 off-campus. Thematic analysis identified 14 key themes, which were categorized into two broad domains: self-factors and management factors. The findings highlight the need for targeted interventions at both behavioral and institutional levels to reduce food waste in college hostels. Implementing a comprehensive food waste reduction policy, improving food quality and variety, and developing educational programs to raise awareness and foster positive attitudes toward sustainable consumption can collectively promote more responsible eating habits among students.
