Abstract

Purpose The aim of this work was to confirm the hypothesis, that Steel’s triple pelvic osteotomy does not significantly narrow the birth canal and women after this operation are capable of spontaneous delivery. Method Information was obtained using questionnaires answered by patients who have undergone surgery and were possible to contact. Results 225 female patients were operated on between 1985 and 2012. We were only able to contact 55 women. A total of 41 patients became pregnant after the time of surgery, 11 of which gave birth spontaneously and 27 by Caesarean section. Three women gave birth in both ways. After unilateral surgery, the ratio of the number of spontaneous births to Caesarean section was approximately 3:4, and after bilateral surgery it was 1:10. Conclusion From the obtained informations is possible to state that spontaneous childbirth is possible in a large number of cases after unilateral pelvic surgery. On the contrary, after bilateral surgery, delivery by Caesarean section is almost unambiguously indicated.
