In the present study, novel hexagonal GdInO 3 :Eu 3+ red phosphors were prepared by a high-temperature solid-state method. Their phase composition, microscopic morphology and luminescence properties were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The results indicated that the crystal structure of the matrix material was unaffected by the doping of different concentrations of Eu 3+ . The GdInO 3 :Eu 3+ phosphors existed as irregular micro-sized polyhedra. They emitted 630 nm red light when excited by 395 nm ultraviolet and 467 nm blue light sources. The optimal doping content of Eu 3+ was found to be 0.07 and the corresponding color coordinates of GdInO 3 :0.07 Eu 3+ phosphor were (0.6426, 0.3510), with a fluorescence lifetime of 1.839 ms and activation energy (ΔE) of 0.15 eV. A white light-emitting diode (LED) was prepared by mixing this red phosphor with commercially available blue and green phosphors, which exhibited remarkable white light emission. The chromaticity coordinates of the prepared device were (0.3638, 0.3481) with a color rendering index of 83.5. The results demonstrated that GdInO 3 :Eu 3+ is a good red light-emitting material, which can be utilized in white LEDs.
