Abstract

Purpose: To determine, for the first time, the Cataract Surgical Rate for Trinidad and Tobago Methods: This was a retrospective, multi-centre review of cataract procedures in all institutions (Public and Private) in Trinidad and Tobago. A multi-modal approach of data collection was undertaken for the period 2010-2014. The different approaches were used as a cross check on accuracy. The inclusion criterion was all eyes undergoing a cataract extraction procedure in Trinidad and Tobago for the five year period 2010-2014 Results: The Cataract Surgical Rate for Trinidad and Tobago was found to be 5,671 per million in 2014. There have been annual increases in the Cataract Surgical Rate for each year under review with an overall increase of 189% from 2010 to 2014. Conclusion: The Cataract Surgical Rate for Trinidad and Tobago in 2014 was comparable to that of well developed economies.
