Abstract

Background: The purpose of this study is to examine the frequency of intoxication with sedatives-hypnotics, antiepileptics, and anti-Parkinsonism drugs in the last four decades (from 1979 to 2019); considering population growth changes. Methods: All poisoned patients admitted to Loghman Hakim Hospital in Tehran were evaluated. The information was classified according to the ICD-10 coding system. The most common reason for poisoning was identified in this period. A new variable was defined as the percentage of poisoning per population to take the population factor into account. Results: Antiepileptic, antiparkinsonism, and sedative-hypnotic drugs were the most common cause of poisoning (22.07%) in this period. Considering the population factor, however, no significant increase was observed in poisoning. Conclusion: Despite the increasing trend of the frequency of intoxication with anti-epileptic, sedative-hypnotic, and antiparkinsonism drugs, no significant increase was observed considering the population factor.
