Abstract

We investigated global food security in response to drought using a process-based crop model within an Earth system model. Globally, future drought losses for annual maize, soybean, rice, and wheat production are projected to be <2%. Despite the small change at the global scale, 62 countries may face drought losses >10% and 24 countries >20%. Vulnerability is highest in countries with lower GDP and higher projected population growth.
