Background Neural tube defects (NTD) are one of the most common congenital defects in the world and have a high prevalence in low-income regions like Latin America. Despite their prevalence, research output on NTDs in Latin America is limited due to inadequate policies and investment in research. We present a bibliometric analysis of scientific publications on NTDs in Latin America from the year 2000 to 2023. Methods This bibliometric analysis examines scientific publications on NTDs in Latin America from 2000 to 2023, utilizing the Scopus database. Articles were selected based on their relevance to NTDs and the affiliation of at least one author to a Latin American institution. Data analysis was conducted using R's bibliometrix package and VOSViewer for visual analysis. Results A total of 722 articles were identified, primarily published in English (78.95%), with Brazil, Mexico, and Chile being the countries with most publications. The institutions with more publications were primarily located in Brazil, with the University of Sao Paulo being the top contributor. Collaborative networks were strongest between Brazil and the United States. The journal with highest quantity of publications was "Child’s Nervous System". The average number of citations per article was 13.51, with studies on folic acid fortification and genetic factors being the most cited. Conclusions This study provides a comprehensive overview of NTD research in Latin America, emphasizing the importance of regional risk factors and prevention policies.
