Abstract

Small and medium size hydrogen fuel cell-based electric generators of power rating 200W to 6kW are increasingly adopted as clean, reliable, and modular alternatives to diesel generators and battery storage systems. Their advantages include zero local emissions, low acoustic and thermal signatures, indoor installation capability, and in-dependence from fossil fuel supply chains. These features make them particularly suitable for critical applications such as defense operations, civil protection shelters, telecommunications infrastructure, healthcare facilities, construction sites, and utilities. Comparative analysis demonstrates lower total cost of ownership (TCO) for fuel cells compared to diesel generators in telecom, clinical, and shelter duty cycles, largely due to reduced maintenance and infrastructure requirements. Furthermore, hydrogen provides a robust resiliency pathway, as it can be locally produced via electrolysis and safely stored for long periods. in this paper, the presented review highlights the key products and companies in the hydrogen generator sector and emphasizes the role of hydrogen-based fuel cell generators in strengthening energy security across diverse market segments.
