Abstract

Green building technologies (GBTs) play a significant role in balancing the advancements in construction industry with environmental sustainability, particularly in the context of rapid urbanization occurring in different parts of the world. The level of adoption of green building technologies is high in developed countries compared to developing countries such as Tanzania due to various socio-economic, knowledge, and systemic-related barriers. This review paper explores the current state and future prospects for the implementation of GBTs in Tanzania. The study presents an overview of the green buildings erected in urban, suburban, and rural areas. This study also highlights contextual factors influencing green buildings’ adoption such as climate conditions, demographic trends, economic constraints, policy frameworks, public awareness, and infrastructural mechanisms. The characterized buildings are compared in the context of material solutions, energy efficiency strategies, and water management practices. The paper concludes by identifying the emerging trends and emphasizing the strategic interventions to be taken into account in order to overcome existing barriers and enhance sustainable building practices in Tanzania.
