Abstract

Digital platforms have become increasingly influential forces in the global economy and society, reshaping industries, economies, and social interactions. This paper explores the multifaceted and often contradictory relationship between platform ecosystems and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Building on existing literature, it proposes a comprehensive conceptual framework for analysing how platforms contribute to and simultaneously pose challenges for achieving these global objectives. The paper delves into diverse methodologies for measuring platform impact across various SDGs, moving beyond simplistic quantitative metrics to embrace qualitative insights and hybrid approaches. It identifies the inherent challenges and pivotal opportunities for platforms to strategically integrate sustainability into their core operations and value propositions, recognising both technological capabilities and organisational complexities. Furthermore, it examines the critical policy implications for fostering responsible platform growth, advocating for a multi-stakeholder governance approach that balances innovation with societal well-being. Ultimately, this paper argues for a more nuanced and holistic understanding of platform ecosystems within the broader context of sustainable development, aiming to provide a robust framework for future research, practical implementation, and effective policy formulation.
