Abstract

The BWRX-300 project was recently granted a construction permit in Canada for the first nuclear power plant featuring a light-water small modular reactor (SMR) in the Eu-ro-Atlantic economic area. Transparency, a fundamental principle of nuclear energy safe-ty, is supported by the public release of BWRX-300 documentation, enabling independent assessment of both safety features and commercial feasibility. Analysis of the available materials suggests that deploying a cluster of BWRX-300 reactors at a single site may not offer a clear competitive advantage over constructing a single large-scale ESBWR unit. This review highlights the need for GE Hitachi to provide more detailed information, par-ticularly regarding the reactor building design and the innovative construction technolo-gies proposed.
