Abstract

A fundamental insight of evolutionary genetics is that the potential of a population to evolve depends crucially on the nature and pattern of its heritable phenotypic variation. Fundamental insights of organismal biology are the organizing principles of physiology and development, leading to the understanding what patterns of the heritable phenotypic variation can arise. Only together, the two insights form the basis for evolutionary explanation.
