Abstract

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of patients undergoing cardiac catheterization (CC) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) at a university hospital. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study from June 2023 to August 2024 with elective patients undergoing CC and PCI at a university hospital in Brazil. To collect sociodemographic information and assess knowledge, attitude, and practice, we applied a self-developed and validated questionnaire. Data analysis included descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The main results showed that patients had limited knowledge, positive attitudes, and proactive practices regarding preparation and general topics investigated before the procedures, as well as self-care and warning signs after the procedures. The variables associated with higher odds of achieving greater knowledge, attitude, and practice included wanting to receive information about CC and PCI, owning a mobile phone, and having completed high school education. Conclusions: These findings provide essential data and a theoretical foundation for developing future educational and training programs targeted at this population.
