This paper presents the selection process of a GreenComp-based data collection tool designed to evaluate sustainability competences within the EduCITY project. EduCITY aims to create a smart learning city environment based on mobile Augmented Reality games integrating on its game-mechanics topics concerning Sustainability and Sustainable Development. Besides the games, it is required a specific data collection tool aligned to its research question, but wider enough to be used in another research contexts. The data collection tool research process involved several stages, culminating in the production of three academic papers. This paper focuses on the contextual and theoretical framework rather than the methodological details. This paper is the second element of a series of three, with the first paper detailing a systematic literature review and the third paper focusing on the specific methodologies for implementing the questionnaire and analyzing the data collected from the Educity activities. The findings will be used to refine and adapt the data collection tool to different contexts, contributing to a deeper understanding of sustainability competences and their role in educational initiatives.
