The Differential Effects of Aerobic and Resistance Training on Sleep Quality Among College Students: An Exploratory Study Using Smart Wearable Devices

Background: While exercise is known to promote sleep quality, the specific effects of different types of exercise interventions on the sleep quality of college students remain inadequately researched. Methods: Initially, the sleep quality of 182 college students was evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Subsequently, 23 volunteers underwent an 8-week exercise intervention. They were randomly assigned to either the aerobic or resistance exercise group to analyze and compare the effects of aerobic and resistance exercises on college students' sleep quality. Sleep quality and exercise safety were monitored using Huawei Band 6 smart wearable devices. Results: The prospective survey highlighted sleep quality challenges among college students, evidenced by elevated PSQI scores. Aerobic exercise and resistance training improved sleep quality and parameters. In the aerobic exercise group, sleep duration increased, with improved blood oxygen saturation and reduced wakefulness. Resistance training increased deep sleep duration and REM sleep. Conclusion: Through smart wearable devices like the Huawei Band, monitoring of both exercise and sleep revealed the beneficial effects of aerobic exercise and resistance training on improving sleep quality among college students. Aerobic exercise increased sleep duration, blood oxygen saturation, and reduced waking frequency, while resistance training significantly increased deep sleep and REM sleep duration.
