In the rapidly evolving global landscape, higher education institutions face increasing pressure to adapt amidst challenges like artificial intelligence integration and academic integrity preservation. This environment demands agile, responsive, and notably, responsible leadership. Achieving academic excellence requires a multifaceted approach that encompasses learning, research, teaching, and service excellence, highlighting the need for strategic, visionary leadership, especially from deans. These leaders play a crucial role in guiding their institutions through the complexities of higher education, emphasizing an ethic of care, inclusivity, and collaborative organisational cultures. Responsible leadership, defined by ethical decision-making, accountability, and a commitment to the stakeholders' well-being, emerges as a vital framework for navigating the challenges inherent in higher education. This leadership style not only addresses immediate challenges but also fosters an environment conducive to long-term sustainability and institutional success. For deans, this necessitates a proactive investment in their leadership development, extending the focus on leadership beyond individual achievements to encompass an institutional culture that values and cultivates leadership qualities at all levels. The chapter delves into the leadership intricacies within the context of medical education, advocating for a shift towards responsible leadership. It introduces the concept of the "Responsible Leadership for Medical Educators" course as a means to embed responsible leadership within faculties, preparing them to lead effectively in the multifaceted domain of academic excellence. Through an autoethnographic exploration of leadership challenges specific to medical schools, the chapter argues for a cultural and philosophical reorientation towards leadership that prioritizes ethical considerations and stakeholder welfare. This paradigm shift ensures that higher education institutions not only navigate but excel in the changing educational landscape, underpinning a transformative era with responsible leadership at its core.
