Remission of Prediabetes and Hyperlipidemia with Germinated Nigella Sativa  Monotherapy: A Case Report

Abstract

Introduction: Prediabetes is an elevated, non-diabetic level of hyperglycemia linked to hyperlipidemia, which substantially increases the lifetime risk of developing type 2 diabetes and major health issues, including heart disease, certain cancers, dementia, and other diseases. The concurrent management of both prediabetes and hyperlipidemia is the critical strategy required to mitigate the development of long-term cardiovascular and metabolic complications. While the general health benefits of Nigella sativa (NS) are extensively documented, studies on the specific benefits of germinated Nigella sativa (GNS)for managing both prediabetes and hyperlipidemia are notably lacking. The objective of this case study is to evaluate and report the therapeutic effects of GNS on a middle-aged male patient diagnosed with prediabetes and hyperlipidemia.

Case Summary: A 52-year-old male was diagnosed with both prediabetes and hyperlipidemia based on the following initial laboratory findings: fasting blood sugar (FBS):125 mg/dL, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c): 5.8%, triglycerides (TG): 175 mg/dL, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C): 183 mg/dL. The patient was treated with 500 mg germinated Nigella sativa capsule (GNSC) daily for 12 months, resulting in significant improvements across his FBS, HbA1c, and lipid panel without any adverse effects. The dosage was subsequently reduced to every other day for the final 24 months, and by the end of the three-year study, FBS, HbA1c, and LDL-C remained stable at approximately 100 mg/dL, 5.0%, and 140 mg/dL, respectively.

Conclusion: This case report documents the first long-term use of germinated Nigella sativa capsule (GNSC) to achieve sustained remission of both prediabetes and hyperlipidemia in a single patient
