Abstract

When I started my doctoral degree at Teachers College, Columbia University, Iwasahigh school educator and visiting scientist atthe American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), and my enthusiasm for enrolling in a doctoral degree I was optimistic, due tothe fact that my GPA was a 3.2 and that I believed that the majority of individuals in a doctoralprogram had above average intelligence. However, my mentor and supervisor at AMNH, Dr. Rob DeSalle, curator and scientist encouraged me to enroll in a doctoral program because of my level of content knowledge and in the field of general biology and microbiology and for my passion for learning. For some, acquiring a doctoral degree can be a significant commitment of time, effort, and financial resources; the question of whether it is worth pursuing a doctoral degree depends on various factors, including career goals, financial implications, and personal fulfillment. In this article, I provide a detailed overview of how I started and completed my Ph.D. and highlight the inherent lessons I learned.
