Abstract

Internet of Things technology has been a game changing innovation that has improved the performance and increased the efficiency of existing renewable energy systems. It has simplified management and control for remote, mobile and inaccessible set up of renewable systems. With this technology, energy production has been maximized, maintenance strategy has been made efficient and troubleshooting methods are simplified with easier and more accurate monitoring of these existing systems. Integrating IoT to energy generation setup has pave the path of renewable energy generation into a positive and promising future.

This systematic and comprehensive review on existing monitoring systems from both stand-alone and IoT-based renewable energy and battery storage systems had been thoroughly studied and referenced from more than 200 published and peer-reviewed papers from the last five years, presenting the different available methods of management, control and monitoring of different solar PV and battery backup systems.

This literature review is intended to determine the contextual and methodological gap that exist on current solar PV and battery backup systems with IoT integration for monitoring the performance and operation of existing systems. Likewise, this literature review has also presented the different challenges and concerns currently being faced by utilizing these technologies and the possible topics and issues that needs to be addressed and given focus in future study which can enhance monitoring, management and operational processes of solar PV set up and battery backup systems for improved functionality, safety and reliability.
