This study looked at disordered eating behaviors in college students to understand the relationship between different aspects of anxiety and disordered eating. The Eating Pathology Symptoms Inventory (EPSI) questionnaire was used to help group students based on their disordered eating patterns. There were five different groups identified, although most students (54%) had lower levels of disordered eating. These groups were: 1) those who exercised too much and focused on muscle building; 2) those with less disordered eating; 3) those who were unhappy with their bodies and binged and restricted; 4) those who had moderate disordered eating and bingeing; and 5) those with high levels of disordered eating. By identifying these different groups, especially one with high anxiety and disordered eating, we can better understand these relationships in college students. This research also can assist colleges in developing more targeted services for their students.
