Among hospitalised cases, too, we were unable to distinguish whether the children were hospitalised for COVID-19 or the virus was identified incidentally during routine screening of children attending hospital for other illnesses. The emergence of new variants also made it difficult to assess waning of natural immunity over time. As children continue to be vaccinated against COVID-19, it will become more difficult to assess long-term protection after natural infection.
