With no reneging or balking or priority-based service order, the vaccination pathway actually represents a straightforward queueing network. Given also the evidence that arrivals are random (Poisson distributed) and that activity-level service times are adequately represented by the considered 2-parameter distributions, the limitations of this study relate mainly to application as opposed to conceptual or methodological appropriateness. Specifically, the conditions surrounding data collection should be carefully considered. First, vaccinees were typically over 70, since vaccination priority in the UK was based primarily upon decreasing age [10]. Second, vaccinations took place over winter, when additional clothing was being worn. Third, data was collected within four to six weeks of each site opening, when staff would not yet be fully familiarised to their new roles. Therefore, in the months following this study it would reasonably be expected that service times would reduce, which, in turn, would allow greater throughput than that deduced here. However, it is important to note that these three factors are not wholly explanative of service time variation, given the substantial differences in Combined duration between Vaccination Centres A and B (Section 3.3).
