However, there is evidence that each state has implemented different public health actions resulting in drastically distinct operating statuses for businesses that have reopened [36]. Therefore, incorporating the heterogeneity in state actions may be necessary in order to better quantify the impact of school reopening scenarios on COVID-19 spread. Second, we did not consider testing and contact tracing explicitly in the simulation. Although we assume isolation of symptomatic individuals promptly after symptom onset, we know that effective contact tracing and testing, in combination with hybrid school reopening scenarios and social distancing measures, will be critical for safely reopening schools. Third, we projected epidemic trajectories through the beginning of April 2021 in order to assess the potential impact of school reopening scenarios during the autumn and winter months.
