    One potential limitation is the modest sample sizes in both our derivation and validation cohorts. Although the exclusion of CMO patients was justified in the current study, this may have resulted in underestimating the impact of malignancy on inpatient mortality. Further, we aimed to focus on admission findings in determining outcomes and hence our risk scores do not include the effects of different treatment regimens. This study identified baseline patient characteristics and admission laboratory values that associate with critical illness and in-hospital death in patients with COVID-19. In this investigation, we developed and validated risk score calculators to predict mechanical ventilation need and in-hospital death in COVID-19 patients. These risk scores could potentially aid clinicians to better stratify risk in COVID-19 patients and optimize patient care and resource utilization in the surge of infections we are facing worldwide.
