Similarly, we assumed the symptomatic fraction of reported SARS-CoV-2 infections remained constant over time, even with the introduction of vaccines (see Appendix). An increase in asymptomatic screening over time would bias the study to overestimate the public health impact of vaccination, while an increase in the asymptomatic fraction of infection over time due to vaccine effectiveness would bias the study to underestimate the public health impact of vaccination. In conclusion, we found that COVID-19 vaccination had a substantial public health impact by reducing COVID-19 cases in California. This study provides evidence on the public health impact of COVID-19 vaccination in the United States, and further supports the urgency for continued vaccination.
